What is a VFD?

A variable frequency drive (VFD) — also known as an inverter drive, AC drive, or frequency converter — is an electronic device that controls the speed and torque of an AC motor by varying the frequency and voltage of its power supply. Unlike a soft starter, which only manages the initial motor start-up before bypassing itself, a VFD remains fully active throughout the entire operation.

This continuous, dynamic control allows precise, on-demand speed adjustment at any point in the process, making VFDs ideal for variable-demand applications such as pumps, fans, compressors, conveyors, and industrial machinery where output requirements change over time. VFDs eliminate harmful inrush currents at start-up, reduce mechanical stress on driven equipment, and enable consistent process control that improves product quality and reduces waste.
